Continuing a common theme of recent posts on living for God, I want to talk today about turning from our sinful and wicked ways.
If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
This is a great verse because it does a wonderful job of summing up what we have to do to really live for God: humble ourselves, pray, seek, and turn from our sinful ways. Sin affects all of us, saved or not saved. Living for Christ or turning your back on him. Preachers, teachers, students, and parents, we all sin. It’s how we handle that sin that separates us. Sin includes many things and many considers sins to be graded on their severity. The Bible doesn’t strictly come out and say there is a scale, but we do see Jesus talk much about sexual immorality and lack of forgiveness. So to give you some scripture to help battle some of things you are going through:
Sexual Immorality: 1st Corinthians 6:18-20
Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.
In addition see 1st Corinthians 10:13 (God will not let you be tempted above what you can bear), 1st Thessalonians 4:3 (Avoid sexual immorality)
Lack of a forgiving heart: Mark 11:25
And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
In addition see Matthew 6:14, Luke 6:35-38, Proverbs 20:22
Gossip: Proverbs 18:8
In addition see Proverbs 20:19, Proverbs 16:28, James 3:5
Foul Language: Ephesians 4:9
In addition see Ephesians 5:4
Pride: Proverbs 16:18
Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
In addition see Proverbs 26:12, Proverbs 28:25-26, Luke 16:15
I have only listed a few things that are mentioned in the Bible, but there are many, many more. When you feel like something you are doing isn’t following God, that small voice could very well be God telling you that you are in sin. Pray and ask forgiveness, then turn away. As Christians we shouldn’t keep falling for the same sinful traps every day. Sure we are all going to mess up and fall, but a repentant heart is always turning the other way and the other way is right towards God. If you have any other sins and the verses that helped you out feel free to post in the comments.
Just remember what we are told in James 1:12
Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
